Does anyone know what this plant is? It has us all baffled. It’s about 3’6″ high and is growing strongly outdoors in our stock beds so it must be hardy.
Hi Brian – here’s a close up. It’s actually a crop from the photo above so the resolution isn’t great – I’ll take a better close up tomorrow. Click either photo for a larger picture.

can you post a close up of the flowers Sue … if the hardy planters don’t identify it!
Sorry Sue, this time I have to let you down, but I like the look of it whatever it is!
Hi Brian,
It’s an Asclepias – either syriaca or speciosa. The description of speciosa is a better match, but the on-line picture of syriaca look the same, assuming the labelling is right! SO we are getting close….
Good I’m glad it’s getting identified, I shall have to look for one over here as I think the flowers are really interesting, love the way they bend back when they are fully open. Four Seasons Nursery has closed and we went over on Saturday to look at what was left, I now have twenty plants to find homes for (it took nigh on two and a half hours to house the Iris and thalictrums I bought from you!)
…and this page tickles the taste buds!

Good luck with Tatton, I hope you enjoy the experience.
Here are some pictures that confirm it’s A. syriaca:

Hi Andrew,
Yes, that’s good enough for me. Great that it’s so sweetly scented, isn’t it? I expect it’s pretty invasive, but in the right place, it’s lovely.
