Over 4 inches of rain last week left me with a very well watered garden, an acre of unmown lawn and a tea-room within a millimetre of flooding. The trickle that passes for a stream at the bottom of the field became a gushing torrent, audible from 500 yards away, and the meadow was half flattened by the sheer weight of water falling from the sky.

Ironically, the one place where there is no water is in the storage tank for the polytunnel watering system. The liner has a worsening leak which is starting to erode the nursery paving foundations. But it’s too wet to fix it as the liner must be dry for repairs….

Apart from that, the nursery is starting to feel quite organised – we are on top of the hairy bittercress problem, the newly restored stock beds are being regularly mistaken for the garden and I have a van. It’s a lovely green Citroen Dispatch, formerly used to move dead deer around for the Forestry Commission. I’m sure it will be fine when I can drive it – since it was formerly Crown property I have to personally visit the DVLA, curtsey and ask if they will kindly redfine it as a serfs van so that I can tax it. I kid not.

Yes, Dad it does drive OK and I am going to get the nursery name painted on the side….
