Getting to the veg plot now entails full waterproofs and a machete to cut through the overhanging and dripping stock beds. Once there, the scene is straight out of ‘The Day of the Triffids’ – the runner bean canes are listing perilously under the weight of plants towering over the tops, the courgettes have annexed the paths and the cabbages have pushed their envirofleece covering high enough to camp under. For the record, crops ready today are: beetroot, onions, carrots, pointy cabbage, runner beans, black french beans, broad beans (the purple flowering sort), mange tout peas, any of five potatoes, yellow and green courgettes and Webbs’ Wonderful lettuce. If we get a dry day (!!) I want to plant out the Caballo Nero, Savoy, Fennel and the rest of the leeks. Must do better at winter veg this year.

I had a great day on Friday filling out some of the borders with plants we brought back from Tatton Show – at least I’m not umming and ahing about whether to keep things aside now. Everything hardy is either going onto the nursery or into the garden. And the exotic plot is beginning to look the business – photos to follow.

Ken – thanks for the offer, but I’ll not do Chelsea next year. Maybe in 2011 when I’ve given it a bit more thought. And it would be great to have a hand – if Tony will spare you!
